What to Bring - Sierra Nevada Teacher Institutes/Workshops

For the Sierra Nevada Teacher Institutes/Workshops, we will be doing indoor and outdoor activities so be prepared for a range of temperatures. Sierra summers can be very warm in the day, cooling at night. We will be doing a fair amount of easy hiking.

For the hiking portions, be sure to bring:

  • Backpack/daypack
  • Reusable waterbottle that will last several hours in the field
  • Appropriate clothing including hat and walking/hiking shoes
  • Sun screen
  • Camera & binoculars (if you have them; we will have several sets of binoculars to share if you do not have your own)

Make sure your backpack will fit the items you bring as well as a large journal, pencils, and a bag lunch that we will provide.

For staying at Jack L. Boyd, be sure to bring:

  • Pillow and bed linens or sleeping bag
  • Toiletries
  • Towels
  • Any musical instruments you might like to entertain the group with by the campfire (guitar, drums, harmonica, etc.) - optional of course!

We recommend that anyone with special dietary restrictions bring their own food. Vegetarian meal options will be provided. If you bring any of your own food, you are not allowed to keep that food in your cabin. You must store your food in the cafeteria.

Cell phone coverage at Jack L. Boyd is very limited. There is a pay phone on the campus if you need to make any calls.
